Now What?

Someone signs up to your mailing list. Excellent.

Then what?

For a lot of businesses, the answer is: they receive a welcome email, perhaps a newsletter three months later, and then silence until somebody remembers the list exists.

An email list can be valuable. But collecting addresses isn’t the same as building a relationship with the people behind them. Start by asking why someone gave you their details and what would be useful to them next.

New enquiries: help them take the next step

Not everyone who enquires is ready to buy immediately.

Someone might be comparing options, waiting for budget approval or trying to understand what the work involves. If they go quiet, it doesn’t always mean they’ve said no.

A useful follow-up could answer a common question, explain your process or share an example relevant to their situation. It should also make it easy to speak to a person. That doesn’t mean sending six “Just checking in” emails. Nobody has ever looked forward to the fourth one. It means thinking about what would genuinely help someone make a decision.

New customers: make the experience easier

Email automation isn’t only for selling.

Once someone becomes a customer, you can use it to explain what happens next, what information you need and when they can expect to hear from you. Clear communication reduces uncertainty and saves your team from answering the same questions repeatedly.

A good customer journey might be as simple as:

Confirm what they’ve signed up for.

Explain the next step.

Provide something useful at the right time.

Check how things went.

The emails should sound like they came from your business, not from a machine that swallowed a marketing textbook.

Past customers: give them a reason to return

If someone has already worked with you, you know more about what they need than you do about a stranger who’s just landed on your website. Could you remind them of a service they may need again? Share a timely tip? Ask for feedback? Let them know about something genuinely relevant?

The timing and message will depend on your business. A restaurant, accountant and property company shouldn’t have the same email journey. Start with one group of customers and one reason to get back in touch.

Don’t automate a bad message

Automation helps you send the right message at a useful time. It won’t make an irrelevant email interesting.

Before building a complicated sequence, write down:

Who is receiving it?

Why are they receiving it?

What do they need at this point?

What should they do next?

When should the emails stop?

And make sure you’re using people’s details appropriately and respecting their contact preferences.

Start with one journey

You don’t need a sprawling system with 27 branches to make email useful.

Choose one moment where people currently fall through the gaps: an unanswered enquiry, a new customer who needs guidance or a past customer you’ve lost touch with.

Build a short, helpful sequence around that moment. See whether it improves the experience and contributes to the result you want.

Your email list isn’t an audience waiting to be sent more stuff. It’s a group of people who gave you a way to keep the conversation going. Give them a good reason to be glad they did.

Someone signs up to your mailing list. Excellent. Then what?
