But if you’re a smaller business, there are sensible things to check before you commit to a big project.

None is a magic ranking trick. They’ll help you see what customers can find, where your information is weak and what might be worth improving first.

1. Search your own business name

Start with the easiest search of all: your name.

What appears? Is your website easy to identify? Are the contact details correct? Do old pages or outdated information create confusion? If you have a Google Business Profile, does it reflect what you offer now?

Someone who hears about you through a referral, LinkedIn or a networking event may search your name before getting in touch. Make that search reassuring, not a detective exercise.

2. Check your main service pages

Look at the pages for the services you most want to sell.

Do they use the words your customers would use? Do they explain who the service is for, what’s included and what someone should do next?

A page titled “Solutions” might make sense inside your business. A potential customer searching for a specific service may need something clearer.

You don’t have to force the same phrase into every paragraph. Write a useful page about the actual service, in language your customers recognise.

3. Give your Google Business Profile some attention

If your business is eligible for a Google Business Profile, check that its category, contact details, opening hours and other key information are accurate. Add useful photos where relevant, and make it easy for happy customers to leave genuine reviews.

For a local business, this is often one of the most visible places customers encounter you. An incomplete profile can leave them with questions you could have answered.

It’s free to manage. It’s worth getting right.

4. Answer a question customers really ask

What question do you answer every week?

A solicitor might explain what a client should prepare before an initial conversation. An accountant might explain what information a new limited company needs to keep. A venue might explain how its booking process works.

Put a genuinely helpful answer on your website. It may give someone a useful page to find through search, and it can help a potential customer decide whether to contact you.

Don’t publish a blog every fortnight just to meet a quota. Publish when you have something worth answering.

5. Check what’s already happening

If Google Search Console is set up, have a look at the searches for which your site appears and the pages people find. You may spot a service page that gets seen but rarely clicked, or discover that people search for your business in a way you hadn’t expected.

That gives you a better starting point than guessing which keyword sounds impressive.

Start with the obvious gaps

You might do these checks and find that you do need specialist SEO help. Technical problems, fierce competition and ambitious growth plans can call for more work.

But you’ll have a clearer brief and a better idea of what you’re paying to solve.

Start by making it easy to find accurate information about your business and useful answers to real questions. If you need to bring in the specialists after that, you can do it without first remortgaging the house.

If you’ve spoken to a marketing agency, you could be forgiven for thinking that getting found on Google requires a five-figure budget and a small army of specialists.
